In the early 1920s there was increasing concern abut the spoiling of the countryside by the invasion of mass motoring and its accompanying infrastructure. In response to this concern, at this remote spot above Clovelly on the main road west from Bideford, a cottage style filling station and garage was built with the intention of presenting petrol supply and a motor workshop in an attractive and sensitive way.
